It’s cool being the only one
But it’s lonely
I could have fallen in the stove a thousand times before if only someone had know me
They say there’s someone for everyone
Oh plus the word will be never done
When all you need is to be meet half way but nobody tries

Don’t be surprised
Don’t be surprised
Don’t be surprised

There are hills and mountains between us
Always something to get over
Needless to say it’s a wonderful day
I just noticed how nice it was to know ya
Oh but be ready to sacrifice
If you love him you should tell him twice
Because when everything that’s alive ultimately dies
Oh lord

Don’t be surprised
Don’t be surprised
Don’t be surprised

Somebody’s watchin
Maybe you want em to see you
But with your regrets and secrets you don’t really want them to be you
Well you can make believe I’m that
And for now I’ll be just fine
But when the child grows up to have more than just your eyes

Don’t be surprised
Don’t be surprised
Don’t be surprised

Now the ending to every story is most enchanting
Now whether its heaven or hell I wear it well
Please forgive me for rambling
I just wanted ya’ll
To know that I don’t know it all
So when that big o’l smile ends up
Being just a disguise

Don’t be surprised
Don’t be surprised
Oh lord
Don’t be surprised
Ooh oh lord
Don’t be surprised
I said don’t be don’t be surprised
There’s nothing left in here that’s surprising baby prising baby…….

The Odd Couple is probably one of the best pop albums in the last decade and this song is just amazing..

The Odd Couple didn't do much for me at first... but it's definitely growing on me. There's a lot more to it than St. Elsewhere (which is still fantastic!)

yeah, this album is really just started to pay off for me big time. It's a much "deeper" album musically than St. Elsewhere. They've really grown a lot in one album and that's saying something for a pop group that already had a fair amount going on beneath the surface.

A great pop song to me can be performed and sung in many different ways and surprise is JUST like that. Plus the juxtaposition of the lyrics and melody in this song is one of my favorite music devices (ie. Happy melody, "Dark" lyrics)

indeed it is an awesome album. i love danger mouse's stuff. even though he's so mainstream now, he's still undeniably really good at what he does. and really gestalt; i enjoy his almost deconstructionist approach to music production. it's almost abrasive, and i like that about it; i like how it challenges some conventions of traditional pop or hip-hop composition.

The technical seeds of production that hip-hop cultivated and popularized is really coming to full fruition right now. Talented songwriters that have these kind of chops (ie. Dangermouse, Cee-lo, Madlib etc etc) at taking hip-op production techniques and apply them to making music such as Jazz, Soul, Pop, etc are really gonna lead the way musically for the next 10 years. We've already seen shades of it with groups like Gorillaz, Gnarls, Yesterdays New Quintet, hell even groups like Portishead, Massive attack all those early "trip-hop" groups were headed in this direction.

you are entirely correct, and it bodes well for the future of popular music. i made this observation to many of my fellow music-loving friends last year (and this year too): it is a great time for music. the past ten years have seen some pretty crappy mass-produced shit come out and be force-fed at us. 2007 (and so far 2008 too) was a hallmark year; no less than 50 albums on my "best of" list. that's a lot of good music in 12 short months! and hip-hop was right there, top of the list (el-p, aesop rock, buck 65...).

...and yeah, there have always been great pioneers like portishead and massive attack, and danger mouse is certainly one of those pioneers. it's no surprise that brit-rockers like damon albarn and sparklehorse have latched onto him to collaborate on their latest projects.
